What Is Social Entrepreneurship? + How to Impact Change With Your Business Degree

Social entrepreneurship is where starting a business meets solving a social issue. In social entrepreneurship, founders — also known as social entrepreneurs — use their business savvy and keen sense of opportunity to build a company focused on creating social value. They look at global problems and apply business and commerce solutions to solve those problems.

That’s the elevator pitch version of social entrepreneurship. However, there’s far more to it. Quite literally, the aim of social entrepreneurs is to save the world through business tactics. And a short elevator ride isn’t enough time to solve the entire world’s problems.

We’ve created this definitive guide to social entrepreneurship to help you understand it. Learn how to make an impact in the world with your business degree by understanding the emergent field of social entrepreneurship.

You can also quickly jump down to the infographic that summarizes social entrepreneurship.

What Is Social Entrepreneurship?

qucik mba

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor launched a study to clearly define social entrepreneurship through empirical data. They found two elements that define social entrepreneurship activity: The organization is driven by social value creation rather than value capture (short-term financial gain) and the organization is market-based rather than non-market-based. This means that the venture needs to function in the private sector, but its missions and decision-making revolves around a social issue, as opposed to the financial bottom line.

This narrowed definition differentiates social entrepreneurship from other business sectors with overlapping characteristics. We’ve broken down the difference between social entrepreneurship and neighboring areas of business:

  • The difference between nonprofit work and social enterprise comes down to funding. Nonprofit organizations are funded by the public whereas social entrepreneurial activity relies on generating their own profit.
  • The difference between social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility comes down to the mission. Social entrepreneurial ventures proactively address a global issue and model their business around that mission. Corporate social responsibility programs focus primarily on their product or service, and incorporate socially responsible practices as a secondary concern.
  • The difference between commercial entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship is innovation. Social entrepreneurs innovate to solve global problems specifically, whereas commercial entrepreneurs innovate around any topic where they see an opportunity gap.

The Origins of Social Entrepreneurship

The term “entrepreneur” originated in French economics as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. While some of those innovators were certainly socially inclined, the spotlight on social entrepreneurship really came with Muhammad Yunus’s founding of Grameen Bank.

Yunus, known as the “Banker to the Poor,” started Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in 1983 with the goal of providing microloans to impoverished people to help them escape from poverty.  This approach to solving social problems through business turned heads, and in 2006, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

Today, social innovation is a valued differentiator. In fact, consumers are four times more likely to trust a brand with a strong purpose.

Not only are consumers more apt to make socially responsible purchases, they’re also looking at the business sector to solve global problems. In a survey by Cone Communications, 78% of people wanted companies to address social justice issues and 63% of American consumers looked to businesses to take the lead on social and environmental change.

Social innovation has transformed from a theory in the early 1980s to a response to social problems, leaving opportunity for you to make an enormous impact with your business degree.

Social Entrepreneurship Examples

Since Yunus’s novel Grameen Bank, hundreds of socially driven companies have emerged. These companies tackle issues such as combating hunger, climate change and poverty. Here’s a list of companies born out of social entrepreneurship:

  • TOMS is a shoe brand that made famous the “one for one” business model. For every shoe purchased, they gave a shoe away. Over the past 13 years, they’ve given nearly 100 million pairs of shoes to people in need.
  • Misfit Foods aims to fight climate change by combining plant-based food solutions with meat. Their mission is to “meet people where they are by making a veggie-forward product that meat-lovers and meat-reducers can all get on board with.”
  • GoldieBlox aims to balance the gender gap in STEM. The media and entertainment company “educates and empowers young girls through engaging content, fun toys and interesting resources on science and technology.”
  • Ashoka believes that everyone is a changemaker. Their program “identifies and supports the world’s leading social entrepreneurs to help them realize their business and social impact aspirations.”
  • Grameen Bank is the bank for the poor. They give out “suitable microloans” to people in financial need to get out of poverty.
  • Better World Books believes in the “power of knowledge.” Every time you purchase a book from Better World Books, the company donates a book to someone in need.
  • The Big Issue aims to “dismantle poverty through providing opportunity.” The magazine offers employment opportunities to the homeless.

Social Entrepreneurship Opportunities at Business Schools

Pursuing social entrepreneurship has tremendous payoffs. You can solve some of the world’s most pressing problems and win a Nobel Peace Prize, not to mention grow a tremendous amount of business success along the way. Feeling inspired? Here are some opportunities to pursue social entrepreneurship at business school:

  • The Fuqua School of Business offers an MBA program with a concentration in social entrepreneurship through the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship. Classes include impact investing and advanced avenues of social impact.
  • The Wharton School offers an MBA/MSW partnership program with the Penn School of Social Policy and Practice. The center is home to the Schwartz Family Penn Impact Lab, a one-week program in Costa Rica accompanied by five months at the university for jumpstarting social projects.
  • The University of Oxford offers three social entrepreneurship electives that go over international social entrepreneurship, innovation and design and development. It also offers fully-funded scholarships to candidates focused on social innovation. They also have an initiative solely for social innovation called the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship
  • Yale University offers the Program on Social Enterprise which discusses nonprofits, social enterprises and public sector social entrepreneurship. The program comes with optionality as you can study Global Social Entrepreneurship, Managing Social Enterprises, Urban Poverty and Economic Development.
  • University of Michigan offers a number of classes through their Center for Social Impact. Some courses include Corporate Responsibility and Ethics, Advocacy and Social Change, and Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Business is changing for the better. A social consciousness has been inspired in board rooms across the world as social entrepreneurship has gained attention.

So, whether you’re set on abolishing poverty or getting carbon emissions down to net zero, your business degree can provide the education you need to tackle those global challenges.

Why Should I Get a Cybersecurity MBA?

Undergraduate students in cybersecurity studies may find that going straight to a master’s program in cybersecurity helps them bring together their passion of working in IT and protecting an organization from external attacks. An MBA in cybersecurity adds a new area of education to the undergraduate degree in the form of business studies. The MBA cybersecurity program also provides a student with insight into the latest in technology and tried-and-true cyberattacks. The MBA cybersecurity program helps the undergraduate become a viable candidate for management roles in the IT field. The combination of business knowledge along with in-depth understanding of IT and cybersecurity is potent and is on the cusp of a new type of career field for people who want to work in IT.

The cybersecurity MBA is also a good option for working professionals who want more out of their career. Working professionals are well-served by going back to school to learn new skills, but the MBA in cybersecurity brings a new dimension to the career. MBA cybersecurity degrees open the door to the world of management and gives the cybersecurity expert more career options. Someone with an MBA in cybersecurity has learned how to handle the management of business, can handle their budgets with ease, make requests for equipment and be able to explain everything in a language that the C-suite can understand. Management frequently looks at the IT department as an expense instead of a necessity. Someone with an MBA cybersecurity degree can change that perception because they have the skills and insight needed to work with non-IT people.

What Can I Do with an MBA in Cybersecurity?

There are a lot of jobs for MBA in cybersecurity, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that there will be a 31% increase in demand for this role between 2019 and 2029. The BLS refers to the position of MBA information security jobs as information security analysts. The median salary for MBA information security jobs is $99,730 per year and likely to increase as the business world looks to cybersecurity to protect their digital assets. The cybersecurity MBA is still relatively new in terms of degrees, but there is a demand for people who possess a combination of these skills. Over time, there will be new jobs in cybersecurity that require MBA cybersecurity degrees and open up more opportunity for those who are early adopters of this type of MBA.

Jobs for MBA in cybersecurity include:

Security Analyst

The security analyst role is one of watching for and evaluating threats to an organization’s IT operations. The security analyst also identifies potential threats, finds weaknesses in the inter- and intranet access and looks for unusual activity throughout the network. Once a threat is identified, the security analyst writes up a report and recommends which actions need to be taken to prevent infiltration from outside actors.

Penetration Tester

The penetration tester is a type of white hat hacker role in that the job requires finding ways to defeat IT security defenses. Testers use a variety of methods and techniques to get access to the IT operations of their employer. When a tester finds a weakness or vulnerability, they inform those in charge of IT security and offer suggestions on resolving the insecurities.

Forensics Expert

The forensics expert is typically brought in after a cybercrime has been committed. Their job is to find out what the cyberthief did to get into the network, determine what areas were accessed, learn what kind of information was stolen, and provide an assessment of the fallout that might occur as a result of the data breach. The forensics expert is a type of in-house detective that has in-depth IT knowledge and knows how to find evidence of tampering within an IT system.

These positions may not always require an applicant to have an MBA in cybersecurity, but having the degree can make the applicant more desirable as an employee. MBA information security management jobs are typically filled by individuals with experience and advanced degrees. Earning an MBA in cybersecurity can help you get employed with any one of these roles and other related positions, but it can also help you accelerate your career advancement.

What Is an MBA in Information Security?

An MBA in Information Security provides students with valuable tools that allow them to learn how information is used in the day to day operations of a business or organization as well as how technology allows the information to be utilized to its fullest potential. This type of degree gives you the knowledge to be able to analyze security protocols, evaluate how information is transferred from one place to another, and how technology can be used to protect and secure vital data that is extremely confidential. It also makes the recovery and restoration of information much easier.

An MBA in information security can be used to obtain employment in many different careers, including as network/platform architects, IT managers and executives, security engineers, data analysts, and cybersecurity professionals. These careers can be found in the public or private sectors and offer the option of unlimited growth over the next several years. This includes an ever-increasing potential for higher earnings and career advancement. Information security protocols are constantly changing in how information is collected, analyzed, and stored. This means that the degree programs associated with this career field are also continually changing and being upgraded.

The amount of data being utilized today is staggering. A graduate with an MBA in information security has the capability to work with large amounts of confidential data and utilize it to its full advantage. Because much of this information is confidential, an MBA graduate must be able to work within strict protocols and highly sensitive cybersecurity programs to protect the data they are working with. It’s essential that problem-solving skills be employed that involves finding out where data breaches occur and how the information has been used. This puts recovery and restoration protocols in motion that the graduate can then use to return the information systems back to a more normal state.

What’s the Difference Between Cybersecurity and Information Security?

Cybersecurity vs information security can be somewhat confusing. Information security is used to help maintain the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of information that is used in both your personal life as well as your business endeavors. Cybersecurity, on the other hand, involves securing the networks and pathways through which that information travels. This includes monitoring and securing those networks to find and eliminate programs that are designed to breach databases and steal confidential and private information.

Information security and cybersecurity go hand in hand. Vital information is constantly being transferred from customers to businesses and from business to business. While the information itself can be secured in a variety of ways, it is still at risk as it travels through cyberspace. Cybersecurity protocols are put in place to provide a secure platform for confidential information to travel over. Both types of security must work together to provide a seamless network of coverage that prevents hackers and cybercriminals from gaining access.

Individuals with an MBA degree in information security are able to establish protocols that secure vital and confidential information as it is used in the daily operations of a business or organization. As an IT executive or security analyst, a graduate is able to protect sensitive information so that it can travel safely across secure networks without being compromised. With this type of degree, you can expect to find work in almost any industry that requires security protocols for both their internet and information systems.

What are the Advantages of an Accelerated Cybersecurity MBA?

Accelerated MBA programs have been commonplace in Europe for decades and proves that the accelerated pace of education can and does work. The major advantage of the accelerated cybersecurity MBA is that it allows working professionals to take less time out of their career to learn new skills and improve their employment prospects. Students are taught the latest in cybersecurity techniques and business management theories and learn how to bring the two skill sets together.

The cybersecurity MBA is a hybrid degree that’s aimed at working professionals who have experience working in the cybersecurity field and have a desire to enter the role of management. The business management portion of the degree teaches students how a business operates, the framework on a majority of businesses are built upon, and how to manage the expectations of employees and executives. Someone who has been working in the IT department and managing the security aspects of the IT infrastructure benefits from earning an MBA in cybersecurity. An accelerated cybersecurity MBA program helps the student stay current on their IT knowledge while adding a set of skills that can advance their career.

What if I Already Have an MBA?

If you already have an MBA, it doesn’t make sense to enroll for another full MBA program. You could ask that the school exempt you from the classes you’ve already taken, but that can create its own set of problems when it comes to completing the coursework. Instead of going back to school, consider getting a cybersecurity graduate certificate instead.

The cybersecurity graduate certificate gives you the education you’re seeking and in less time. The education offered by a cybersecurity graduate certificate enhances your existing MBA and adds a new credential to your skill set that’s respected by employers. Getting a graduate certificate in cybersecurity offers you the same employment opportunities as a cybersecurity MBA and puts you on the career path to working in cybersecurity management.

The main difference between a graduate certificate and an undergraduate certificate comes down to one’s level of education. That is, an undergraduate that hasn’t earned a college degree won’t be able to take a graduate certificate course. However, someone with a master’s degree is best served by taking a cybersecurity graduate certificate course instead of engaging in an accelerated master’s degree program in cybersecurity. Earning a graduate certificate in cybersecurity usually requires about 12 to 15 credit hours which enables a working professional with an MBA to add to their knowledge base in less time.

Working professionals don’t always have the time to devote to the credit hours needed for a graduate certificate in cybersecurity. However, a lack of time doesn’t mean a lack of desire. Online graduate certificate programs in cybersecurity give the working professional the opportunity to attend classes and complete coursework on their personal schedule. The student can earn their certificate as long as they complete their work by the stated deadlines.

A working professional who wants to earn their certificate quickly have the option to take accelerated classes to earn a cybersecurity graduate certificate online. The coursework and classes are the same as the slower-paced schedule, but require completion on short deadlines. A fast paced certificate program may be a lot of work, but for those who want to get their education done and over with, an accelerated onilne cybersecurity graduate certificate program is an option.

Can Executives Benefit from a Cybersecurity MBA?

Absolutely. Cybersecurity for executives helps executives step out of their organizational silo and learn more about the threats their organization faces from cybercrime. Executives frequently fail to understand the complexities and seriousness of cybercrime and instead look at the IT department as a money sink instead of a vital part of the organization. Executives that take the time to learn about cybersecurity are executives that are taking a forward-facing look at the role of the IT department and how the IT workforce puts forth their best efforts to protect the company from infiltration. Cybersecurity for executives helps those at the top become more engaged with the IT department in general and helps the executive understand and comprehend the threat poised by cybercrime to their operations.

How Do I Save Money on a Cybersecurity MBA?

First and foremost, a person should perform an internet search for the best and cheapest cybersecurity masters. The results will show schools that are known for affordability. A person wants to limit these search results to either a school that offers online courses or one that’s local. At this point, a person should check each listing and determine if the price seems affordable, especially when an individual factors in all the other ways to make school more affordable.

If a person doesn’t find an adequate amount of search results, he or she may want to look for more schools in the area without searching for the best and cheapest cybersecurity masters. Even if the price is slightly higher, it’s still possible to make obtaining an education more affordable.

For instance, even if a school didn’t receive a search listing for the best and cheapest cybersecurity masters, a person may look into grants to help with the cost of the tuition. A grant is an amount of money that a person receives to help with the cost. This money doesn’t need to be paid back unless a person doesn’t complete his or her degree. A person may find both state and federal grants, and private grants are available as well.

A person may also want to look into scholarships to help with the price of a cybersecurity degree. A scholarship is also free money that a person receives for a school that also must be paid back if a person doesn’t complete his or her education. A person can earn a scholarship for sports, academic achievement, and being an outstanding citizen, among other factors.

The best and cheapest cybersecurity masters are also possible if a person looks into employer reimbursement. Employer reimbursement consists of a person receiving financial assistance for school if the person works for the company during the entire duration of his or her degree. There may be other stipulations, such as the person has to work for the employer for a certain length of time after he or she completes the degree.

How Much Can I Make with a Cybersecurity MBA?

Especially if a person finds a way to make a cybersecurity degree affordable, the average masters salary, according to PayScale, is around $98,000 per year for an information assurance specialist. This figure is the same as $47.12 per hour. In the metro areas in the U.S., the average cybersecurity salary is even higher. A person can make up to $380,000 per year. This figure is equivalent to $182.69 per hour.

Not only is the MBA information security management salary higher in certain areas, but the average cybersecurity masters salary is also higher in some positions. For instance, the average information security manager salary is almost $30,000 more than that of an information assurance specialist. To be exact, a person the average cybersecurity masters salary for this position is $127,000 per year. This particular salary is the same as earning $63.50 per hour working full time.

Moreover, the MBA information security management salary for an information technology (IT) director is $105,000 annually. The average hourly wage for this salary is $53.85.

With a cybersecurity MBA, a person can become a fraud investigator. This particular person is responsible for checking on people who commit fraud against companies and the government. A person may find a role at an insurance company. On average, a person who takes on this role makes $86,000 per year, as noted by PayScale. Like other jobs in this field, a person will usually make a higher salary if he or she works in one of the major metro areas in the U.S.

A person could also choose to be an information security analyst. The market for this particular job is expected to grow by 18 percent from 2014 to 2024, and a person who takes on this role can expect to earn an average salary of $92,600 per year, which is the same as around $50 per hour.

The bottom line, no matter what type of role a person takes on with a master’s degree in cybersecurity, he or she can expect a lucrative salary that can help him or her repay student loans while still giving him or her enough to live off of comfortably. Generally, a person wants to take on a management role if he or she is looking for the highest salary because the MBA information security management salary is higher than a standard salary.

Entrepreneurship certification programs include courses such as entrepreneurial marketing, venture capital investment and business planning. Product development courses teach inventors how to get their ideas off paper and into a manufacturing facility.

Entrepreneurial technology and decision-making skills are key concepts in most entrepreneurship certification programs. There are even undergraduate certificates for those who have obtained a bachelors degree and want to take four to six courses to improve their entrepreneurial skills.
